New to Sunset Crossing? A Few Local Places Worth Knowing

A handful of names for a new Sunset Crossing address: coffee with a playscape, garden advice, a vet taking new clients, Cajun dinner, and the library.

Sooner or later, somebody will ask how you’re settling into Sunset Crossing, and you’ll realize that your answer depends on the day.

The house is good. The dog is still investigating the fence. You’ve bought a plant for the porch, although neither of you seems entirely confident about the arrangement. And you’d really like to go somewhere for coffee where “getting out” means more than sitting in a drive-through.

This is where a few local names come in handy. Somebody to ask about the plant. A vet to call before the dog develops an opinion about dinner that involves eating something from the yard. A restaurant that makes the evening worth leaving home for.

There are good options around Richmond and Rosenberg. These are a few I’d put on your list as you get acquainted with the area beyond Sunset Crossing.

Coffee where the kids have somewhere to go, too

Blockhouse Coffee & Kitchen at 611 Jackson Street, Suite C, in Richmond deserves a look when you want to meet a friend for coffee but the children are part of the invitation.

The Richmond location is at Jax & 7th, on the corner of Jackson and Seventh. Behind the building, there’s a backyard and playscape. That gives a coffee outing a different possibility: you can sit with your cup while the kids play within your supervision, rather than spend the visit repeating, “Please don’t touch that.”

The backyard is one of the things neighbors mention in their comments about Blockhouse. They also praise the coffee and the character of the space. For a new Sunset Crossing resident, it’s an option for an outing that includes something for the grown-ups without asking the children to be delighted by a latte.

One detail worth knowing: the kitchen closes earlier than the coffee shop. Blockhouse currently lists kitchen service until 2 p.m., so make this a morning or lunch visit if food is part of your plan.

The space also hosts markets and other activities. Keep an eye on what’s coming up if you enjoy shopping from local makers. Coffee and a little browsing can become a perfectly good Sunday plan.

Take the plant question to Enchanted Forest

If you’re looking at the yard and wondering what to put in it, Enchanted Forest at 10611 FM 2759 in Richmond is a useful place to start.

The garden center carries plants, pottery, and garden accents, but the help may be the most valuable thing you take home. Its staff invites customers to bring photographs and dimensions when asking for advice.

Take a picture of the spot you want to improve. Tell them whether you’re picturing a pot beside the door, something along the fence, or a plant that won’t require you to develop a second career in gardening.

Be honest about that last part. There’s no sense buying a demanding plant and hoping it will become more independent once it gets to Sunset Crossing.

Enchanted Forest also offers help with plant problems. If something you already own is struggling, bring photographs rather than arriving with the description “It used to look happier.”

This can be a family outing, too. The nursery describes grounds with a creek, chickens, and goats. Give yourself time to look around instead of treating the visit as a quick dash for a bag of soil.

You may leave with one pot and a better idea. That’s a reasonable amount of gardening ambition for a Saturday.

The dog needs a local contact, too

For pet care, Greatwood Veterinary Hospital at 401 Crabb River Road in Richmond is a name to keep handy. Despite “Greatwood” being in the name, the address is Richmond.

The practice welcomes new clients and provides care for companion animals, including preventive care, medical treatment, and surgery. Its team page lists Dr. Rodney Anderson and Dr. Jane Lyttle among its veterinarians.

The published schedule includes weekday appointments and Saturday-morning hours. That Saturday option is worth knowing about if your weekdays are difficult to rearrange. Call 281-342-7770 to talk with the office about getting your pet established.

If you’re moving with an older animal, or one who already takes medication, this is a call to make while things are calm. You can introduce yourself and talk about transferring records before you need help in a hurry.

And tell the staff a little about your pet. The dog who loves everyone and the cat who regards a carrier as a personal betrayal may need very different introductions.

You’ve spent plenty of time finding your own way around. Getting a familiar veterinary office for the four-legged household member belongs on the list, too.

When dinner needs more personality

For an evening with Cajun flavors, try Ramble Creek Grill at 7930 West Grand Parkway, Suite 100, in Richmond.

Its menu brings together burgers and steaks with dishes such as gumbo and shrimp and grits. The restaurant describes its cooking as rooted in its family’s Louisiana background, which gives you something more specific to look forward to than “a place with a menu.”

It’s a good candidate when everybody wants dinner out but nobody is agreeing on what dinner should be. Someone can investigate the Cajun dishes while somebody else stays happily in burger territory.

This is a drive out into Richmond rather than a restaurant inside Sunset Crossing. Make it the destination for the evening, especially if you want time to sit over the meal instead of fitting it between errands.

If you’re arranging dinner with friends from elsewhere in Fort Bend, send the Grand Parkway address along with the name. It saves the group from discovering that they’ve been discussing different locations after somebody has already ordered a drink.

There’s no requirement to choose a special occasion. “We haven’t had a proper conversation all week” is enough of a reason to go to dinner.

Keep George Memorial Library in your back pocket

Some days you want to leave the house without paying for another meal or buying another thing.

George Memorial Library at 1001 Golfview Drive in Richmond is worth remembering for those afternoons. Beyond the books, its calendar includes children’s story times, games, and programs for adults.

That makes it useful in more than one stage of family life. You might go with a toddler, take an older child to look for something they actually want to read, or find a program that interests you for once.

Look at the calendar by age group and choose something that fits. You don’t have to turn the visit into an educational mission. Let someone pick a book because the cover looks funny. Pick one yourself because you finally have time to read it.

Between coffee at Blockhouse, a little help from Enchanted Forest, a vet on Crabb River Road, and dinner at Ramble Creek, you’ve got several places to begin.

And if the plant survives, you can report back with considerable pride. The dog will probably take credit.
